Us was SXSW 2019's Opening Night Film, and its premiere was highly anticipated in the wake of the surprise smash success of Peele's previous film Get Out, which combined horror with startling candor about American race relations. Peele had been to SXSW in 2016 for the premiere of Keanu, his comedy with Key and Peele partner, Keegan Michael Key. Nyong'o is best known for her 2013 Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress in 12 Years A Slave, and in addition to Us, she also starred in the 2019 Film Festival selection Little Monsters.

SXSW Film: Ready Player One

Spielberg is among the most successful filmmakers in recent history, and in 2018, he directed Ready Player One and came to SXSW Film for its world premiere where he introduced the film alongside the main cast members. As part of the promotion of the film, in addition to a wildly popular VR activation, Warner Bros. had people dress in uniforms based on the movie and appear around Austin, including at the premiere.

SXSW Film: The Big Sick

Nanjiani was already known to SXSW Film audiences for his role in Silicon Valley which world premiered at SXSW in 2014. He returned in 2017 with The Big Sick, a semi-autobiographical romantic comedy co-written with Gordon, his real-life wife. Apatow and Mendel were the film's producers and attended the screening at Austin’s historic Paramount Theatre.

SXSW Keynote: Darren Aronofsky

Aronofsky has built a long directorial career as a unique and provocative artist who has maintained an indie sensibility even while helming such high-profile films as The Wrestler, Black Swan, and Noah. At SXSW 2018, he was coming off the successful Fall 2017 release of Mother! and used his Keynote presentation to explain his “10 Commandments of Indie Filmmaking.”

Kerry Washington and the New Rules of Social Stardom

At the time of this session, she was starring in the hit political thriller Scandal, which aired on ABC, and was regarded as one of Hollywood's most prominent African-American stars. SXSW Conversation: Robert Duvall with Leonard Maltin

In a career that began with his memorable role in 1962’s To Kill A Mockingbird, Duvall has earned six Oscar nominations (and one win), as well as four Golden Globes and two Emmy Awards. He came to SXSW 2014 in conjunction with the Film Festival screening of A Night in Old Mexico, and highlights from his on-stage interview included his stories about working on The Godfather with Marlon Brando, James Caan, and Francis Ford Coppola. He returned to SXSW Film in 2015 to premiere Wild Horses, which he also wrote and directed.

SXSW Keynote: Neil Young & Jonathan Demme

At the time, the two had just collaborated on a concert documentary called Heart of Gold, and Demme joined Young for a Keynote interview to discuss the project. The two later worked on another film called Neil Young Trunk Show, which debuted at SXSW in 2009. Demme was an early SXSW Film advocate and remained so until his death in 2017, and Young also has come back to SXSW in subsequent years to promote his various film, music and tech ventures.

SXSW Film: Phone Booth + A Conversation With Joel Schumacher

Schumacher had a five decade career in Hollywood, most notably as a director on such box office hits as St. Elmo's Fire, The Lost Boys, and two Batman movies. In 2003, he brought his latest film, Phone Booth, to SXSW and took part in an interview session. His personal promotional effort came after Phone Booth's original release had been delayed by several months due to October 2002's D.C.sniper attacks.

SXSW Conversation: Elisabeth Moss & Brandi Carlile

SXSW Film: What We Do in the Shadows

Along with Jemaine Clement, who was known for the SXSW 2006 favorite Flight of the Conchords, Waititi co-created the film version of What We Do in the Shadows, which screened at SXSW in 2015. The movie was eventually developed into an FX television series of the same name, which premiered at SXSW 2019 and went on to earn multiple Emmy Award nominations. Waititi went on to win the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar in 2020 for his film Jojo Rabbit, which was also nominated for Best Picture.

SXSW Conversation: Jake Gyllenhaal & David Gordon Green

Gyllenhaal had been to SXSW before, namely when Source Code was the Opening Night Film in 2011. He arrived in 2016 to support the release of Demolition and appeared at this session to discuss his career, as well as some of the challenges he took on for his various roles, such as not knowing how to box when he started work on the film Southpaw, in which he portrayed a professional fighter.

The Eyes of Robots and Murderers

Abrams and Jarecki are both acclaimed filmmakers and have been friends for some 25 years, so this session provided an intimate platform for them to discuss their mutual interests in both film and technology. Abrams also gave the audience a preview of Westworld which premiered on HBO later that year.
